

otto is a modern redesign of the
mortar & pestle.

For this project, I let form and mechanism steer my product toward its final functionality. My process involved creating several sketch models of various kinetic mechanisms and turning the abstract into a functional product for the kitchenware market.
While narrowing down what the form could represent, it dawned on me that the mortar and pestle hadn't been changed since its inception thousands of years ago, which seemed like the perfect design challenge to me.
